Eczema is a chronic skin ailment giving these symptoms: dry and rough skin, redness, itching, small papules and small blisters filled with fluid. The blisters develop into small or larger superficial sores that cause weeping, oozing and crusting. The skin can become hard and thickened. The outer area of the skin can scale off in some areas and excessive pigmentation can develop.

The symptoms often occur in small or large distinctly confined areas and often in a symmetrical pattern on both sides of the body. Eczema tends to periodically flare up and settle down.

Eczema is most common in children. However, also adults may get eczema and often of a more severe type than childhood eczema. The condition can become chronic and persist for months and years. An important mechanism of this disease is inflammation. The release of tissue signal substances like histamine causes many of the symptoms of the inflammation.

There are two main categories of eczema. Atopic eczema has internal causes that are poorly understood, but inheritance plays a causing role. Irritant or allergic eczema is caused by a reaction against factors of several kinds that come in contact with the skin, come into the body by the food or are inhaled with the air. The two types are not always clearly distinguished, because an atopic eczema can be aggravated by irritants.

Factors causing allergic or irritant eczema are many, some examples are: soaps, cosmetics, sun-rays, dry air, cold weather, nuts, milk, diary products, food additives and scratching by clothes. Some conditions can give eczema as a complication, for example infections, varicose veins and greasy, seborrheic skin.

If the eczema occur during or right after exposure to some chemical or physical factor, irritant or allergic eczema will often be the right diagnosis. Doctors can also often test solutions of the most common allergens on the skin, and thereby detect a causing agent of the eczema.

A habit of rubbing and scratching can cause eczema at the area often being rubbed. Since the uncomfortable feelings in the skin caused by eczema can make a person rub the affected parts, an already existing eczema can be worsened by rubbing or scratching. Skin affected by eczema can easily be infected by micro-organisms that worsen the condition.

The following measures may be useful by any kind of eczema:

- You can find creams and lotions to help against eczema by exerting many simultaneous actions: softening the skin, protecting the skin from external impacts, reducing inflammation, moisturizing the skin, reducing itching, killing bacteria or fungi, removing scales and induce healing of sores and damages.

- Some of these topical remedies are wholly composed of natural ingredients; others can contain natural and synthetic ingredients in combination. Ingredients that give each of the listed effects are blended together. Oily substances that give several of the effects simultaneously are often important ingredients.

- Some of these topical drugs use steroid hormones to alleviate inflammation. There are however some scepticism against use of drugs containing steroids, especially long time use, because steroids can give skin atrophy.

- Anti-histaminic oral drugs are sometimes prescribed to treat eczema. The main use of these drugs is to reduce inflammation.

- There are also oral pills made of natural ingredients available in the market to treat eczema. Such pills also work by reducing inflammation, stimulating healing and supplying materials for skin healing.

- Examples of ingredients that can be found in natural oral and topical remedies for eczema are: selenium, zinc, Omega-3-oils, artichoke extract, milk thistle extract, olive leaf extract, gamma-linoleic acid, grape seed extract, collagen type II, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate.

- Of these ingredients selenium, omega-3-oils, gamma-linoleic acid, milk thistle extract, olive lief extract and artichoke extract alleviate inflammation but also stimulate healing. Zink, grape seed extract, collagen type II, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate hinder tissue destruction and stimulate healing. The oily substances also make the skin softer, more elastic and help taka away scales.

- Avoiding stress and getting more profound relaxation regularly can help to hinder eczema flaring up. Meditation is a good method to get deeper relaxation.

By eczema caused by allergy or irritation from substances, avoiding the exposure can often cure the condition. Sometimes it may be difficult to avoid exposure to the causing agent, because the substance is a part of the environment or because the causing substance is not known.

It can also be difficult to know if the eczema is really caused entirely or partly by some allergen or irritant. If the eczema gives much trouble it can therefore be useful to test out if some external factor is a causative agent, by trying to remove exposure to several factors, one aft
The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups.

After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments.

Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free.

After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.

It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.

Treatment for Eczema? Is there a Miracle?

My 3 year old daughter has eczema ';Atopic Dermatitis'; since she was born. We tried everything from Prescribed Steroid and Non Steroid Medication to Natural things like (Drinking Herbal Tea, ). Tried MSM . Seriously i think I tried everything. My wife cleans the house everyday(Mops and Vaccums). She is total neat Freak. Steroid cream does temperaliy make it better. I feel so guilty putting that on her.

We never use scented detergents, never wears anything but 100% cotton, Used Eucerin , Vaseline , Seriously we tried all the asian methods also. Nothing seems to work. I was hoping and praying that there is a cure. I know there is no cure in western medicine. And we are trying some herbal medicine right now. It is not cheap but working on it. they say it needs to be taken for 6 months. I've heard from 3 different people that this worked for their kids. I hope this is the miracle.

Please let me know if there is a miracle out there?Treatment for Eczema? Is there a Miracle?
I don't think that there is a miracle out there but I used to have very very bad eczema when I was a child. You should probably focus more on making your daughter more comfortable than looking to cure it. What worked for me was oatmeal baths. My mom used to put oatmeal in a sock and then put me in the tub and I would just play with the sock squishing it and when I was little it was actually fun and made me feel better. I hope that this helps and I hope that it helps knowing that most people grow out of it or barely have it later on in life.Treatment for Eczema? Is there a Miracle?
ask your doctor about vitamin e i had eczema bad on my hands and started taking vitamin e it went away and i haven't been to a dermatologist for years.
No, there isn't a miracle out there for it. My son had it finally he grew out of it several years later. Some parents say use NOXZEMA. I just used what the doctor prescribed which had some steroids in it. Just use that while the child is still a wet or moist from the bath. Try olive oil or moisturizing lotion with aloe in them. Keep at it. If your miracle works please share it. I was there. Had to wash in nothing but hot water. Soaps to cleanse the skin were out of the question. Hang in there it will pass. Worse in the winter so keep the kid moisturized.
The only cure at this day and age is avoiding citric acid, don't scratch it, and use cream or something immediately if it starts to occur. Also, moisture could affect it. I'm not really sure, I just heard that somewhere.

  • Eczema UVB Treatment?

My 14 year old son started suffering from eczema at around the age of 9. When he was 12, we finally went to a dermatologist who could prescribe us with some creams/ointments that helped reduce the severity of the eczema, especially on the face.

The dermatologist gave us elidel cream and advantanointment, both for the face. He advised us to regularly use moisturizer and apply an ointment called diprosone OV on the body.

The body since then has gotten much better, but the face has started to flare up again. We asked ther dermatologist again, and he started treating my son with the UVB light treatment around 10 weeks ago.

Now my son's face has started to grow blotchy, red and very flaky. He has already lost half an eyebrow, and his cheeks have been burned by the UVB treatment. Now we do not know if the UVB treatment is a good idea anymore, but the dermatologist seems to think it is.

Should we continue? and is there anything extra we can do to reduce severity?Eczema UVB Treatment?
Hi, my name is kymrie, i'm 14 and i first started having symptoms of eczema in the summer of 6th grade- about 3 or 4 years ago.

i just got diagnosed with eczema on tuesday and i had it on my face- around my eyes, on my left cheek, and around my mouth. all around my neck, and on both of my arms in the crease of my elbows-it was symettrical.

the dermatologist told me to use Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream USP, 0.1 % twice daily on everything but my face, and on my face she recommended Desonide ointment.

    those are both prescription only.

also she gave me a list of what i should and shouldnt do.

i cant use any body wash with fragrance in it (use Cetafil), my parents have to wash my clothes with this special detergent, i can't wear dark colors, and what i wear has to be 100% cotton, i can't take hot or cold showers, it has to be luke warm once daily for no more than 10 minutes. i can't use perfume or any other frangrance related stuff such as anything from bath and body works.

and she said there's many different types of eczema, so she gave me manyy samples to use.

Eucerin didn't work on me, but it worked on my aunt.

    Cloderm didn't help at all.

but as i said, there's alot of different types. so you have to kinda try out everything.

also, CeraVe moisturizing lotion helped alot.

and in the three days that i've been using these medications,

my skin has gone back to normal,

and they only thing that looks different from my natural skin is the eczema that was on my arms because i went 3 years without having it checked out and it lost it's pigment.

    medications i recommended earlier:

    Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream USP, 0.1%

    Desonide Ointment 0.05%

    Cetaphil sensitive skin cleanser

CeraVe moisturizing lotion (a must have)

i hope that helped out a little bit.

    ask your dermatologist about those.

    :]Eczema UVB Treatment?
I dont know about UVB treatment. But my son started at 15mths. Was given the usual creams from the dr, they didnt help.

Saw a program on TV detailing the use of probiotics with babies with eczema (Perth, Aus). Do a search on eczema and probiotics, there is heaps of info.

We found the one that worked for us was a refrigerated variety called Primadophilus Reuteri. (same friendly bacteria a mother gives in her breastmilk). Start off with one capsule then after a couple of weeks up to a maximum dosage of three capsules. (its completely natural)

The effect for my boy and friends who have tried it with the same eczema problem was fantastic. The skin is like new, you would not realise my son has eczema. He is now on maintenance dosage of one a day and it has helped his whole immune system. No bad tummies and very mild case of colds etc. (4yrs old now)

I have not had to worry about what he eats. Some eczema is said to be caused by leaky gut syndrome.

I am careful what I wash him and his clothes with. The eco products out now are great and not too expensive.

You may need to get this particular probiotic from the US. I used to use betterlife.com. They were excellent and the most reasonably priced. I have also heard that infacol are using the same bacteria in a new product.

If you cant find Primadophilus Reuteri, a bifidus variety (refrigerated) will also work. Depends on the brands available.

NZ sells it in the health food shops as well.

    Good luck

Treatment with UVB light is supposed to be considered one of the safest forms of phototherapy for widespread eczema that has not responded to medications applied to the skin. Usually three to five treatments a week are recommended, with a gradual increase in UVB exposure depending on the skin type. Significant clearing of eczema can usually be expected in one to three months.

Exposure to UVB light must be carefully monitored to prevent sunburn. During treatment, the eyes must be shielded with goggles to guard against the possible formation of cataracts. Your doctor should take special precautions to protect your son’s eyes so that his vision will not be affected the by treatments. Premature skin aging may also be a side effect of prolonged use of UVB treatments.

Natural sunlight contains ultraviolet light. UV light kills “T” cells in skin, reducing redness and slowing the overproduction of skin cells that cause scaling. This is why brief, regular periods of sun exposure can help to clear psoriasis. Prolonged time in direct sunlight is not recommended because of the possibility of skin damage, including skin cancer. Exposing the skin to UV light in carefully controlled doses, as is used in phototherapy, is considered much safer because it is administered under controlled conditions. However, it should be noted that additional sunlight after treatment should be limited, since the ultraviolet rays that occur naturely in sunlight can cause sunburn, which can make the symptoms worsen.

Sunlight contains two kinds of UV light known as UVA and UVB. Both can be used to treat eczema. In phototherapy, the affected person sits or lies inside a “light box” a booth fitted with special light-emitting tubes. Usually people go to a doctor’s office to receive phototherapy. Sometimes a light box can be purchased with a doctor’s prescription for use at home. If you are prescribed a light box for use at home it is absolutely essential that you follow the instructions carefully. Improper use could result in skin damage.

Phototherapy involves the use of light to treat a medical condition. Ultraviolet light therapy improves eczema symptoms in some people. Phototherapy may incorporate ultraviolet light or may combine the use of ultraviolet light with psoralen, a drug that increases light sensitivity. Psoralen may be taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Psoralen can cause short-term side effects such as nausea, headache, bringing and itching. Some of these side effects can be avoided if psoralen is taken with food. When psoralen is applied to the skin, it is applied as a cream, lotion or a gel solution.

While ultraviolet rays occur nationally in sunlight, excessive sun exposure causes sunburn, which can make the symptoms worsen. Phototherapy uses carefully measured amounts of ultraviolet light, a safety measure that cannot be duplicated by simple exposure the sun.

With the above in mind, You stated that your son's face has started to grow blotchy, red and very flaky.; yet, you don't mention whether there are allergen in your environment. You may have been opted to suppress your son symptoms. In this way the allergen may still remains and is still causing damage to your son,s body; yet, and because the symptoms are no longer present on your external organ (the skin) as a result of the symptom suppressing treatment, you are left with a false sense of security regarding your internal organs and the damage being done to them. I can't not stress enough the importance of you confronting your allergen/irritant culprits. You have got to identify the instigating flareups and remove them from your environment.

You must pinpoint any changes in your environment that are consistent with your son’s flareups. Is he around household pets (like cats or dogs)? Especially in the case of flushing of the face, spicy foods can trigger this type of a reaction. Have you noticed a connection with either of these probable causes. Have you moved recently? How is the air quality and have you tested for dust mites? Is there mold or mildew in your environment? Have you considered a new cleaning product or air freshener as a possible culprit? Formaldehyde, which is found in some air fresheners and deodorizers could the instigating culprit.

Medications used to suppress the symptoms of eczema don't address the cause; and as a result promote your son’s longterm suffering. Once you remove the cause of your son eczema irritation, you can remove the eczema. Identifying the thing or things promoting your son’s flareup is of extreme importance to your healing. Your son’s body isn't crying out for medication; it's crying out to alert you of an allergen/irritant causing its malfunction.

Stress is a culprit in that it releases cortisol which, in turn, increases histamine release. It is the increased histamine activity that will produce the eczema symptoms. A natural de-stresser is chamomile. If your son isn’t aren't allergic to chamomile, this is an ideal option for natural antihistamine relief. Another natural option for antihistamine relief is vitamin C.

Also, if your son is currently taking other medications, read the side effects to determine whether or not this is your son’s eczema culprit. Have you been prescribed elidel or protopic recently?

An eczema reaction displayed by your son’s body is a toxic release. It is the body's attempt to rid itself of the toxins that have made their way into the bloodstream and skin. Thus, the logical response is to identify the toxic invader; so that the culprit can be removed from your environment. Once the toxic invader is removed from your environment, the son’s body can successfully complete the healing process. To medicate your son without removing him from the presence of the instigating culprit (allergen/irritant) would be like me (who is allergic to poison ivy) standing in a patch of poison ivy, while rubbing my skin down with calamine lotion. My first reaction in that situation, should be to remove myself from the presence of the poison ivy. After I've identified the toxic agent and removed myself from its presence, then I am clearly able to focus on healing/repairing my body from the damage done to it. Your number one priority should be to clearly identify your son’s allergen/ irritant culprit, so that his healing is not compromised.

Seawater is one of the best treatments for many skin maladies.

Burns, cuts, you name it. It cleanses and speeds the healing process significantly.

There are many things that could be rubbed on to eczema that will temporally make it feel better. The only way one can do away with eczema is to find out what causes it. My infant daughter had it until I discovered it was caused by an allergy to dairy products. Once dairy products were omitted from her diet, the eczema went away.
by bathing in dead sea eczema can be cured.

Does anyone know of any natural treatments for Eczema?

My son is three. He suffers so bad from Eczema, his face is open sores. The topical steroid cream does not work for him anymore. Please help. The doctors keep telling me to use the steroid cream, and are not concerned at all. I need some advice.Does anyone know of any natural treatments for Eczema?
It'll burn but white apple vinegar will cure it.Does anyone know of any natural treatments for Eczema?
Dairy is often a trigger - cut out all for now. Get some aqueous cream for washing him and E45 cream to apply afterwards. Get an eco-friendly washing powder (with no chemical additives). Avoid using anything perfumed near him. Get some evening primrose oil and beta-carotene capsules (you can squeeze them out so he doesn't have to swallow them). Do not put apple cider vinegar on his face - that would be extremely painful and cruel. There is also a good eczema cream by Weleda if you can get it.
You really need to get away from steroids anyway -- long term just not good for him. You can take some effective natural approaches and make sure his diet is right -- diet is often the key to flare ups as you probably know and getting that right is vital.

I'll post some useful links -- give me a minute to gather them:

I hope you can use one or more of these and they prove a useful to you too.

I should also add that like so many ailments there is a school of thought that certain dietary factors, including over acidity, may result in the occurrence of illness. For a little one, doing away with dairy is obviously a big step -- we use home made almond milk for our 2 year old -- never given her any cow milk or other dairy generally (easy to make by grinding raw almond and then whizzing it ins processor and adding a hint of organic agave syrup-- or can be bought ready made -- but not cheap, and a bit too sweet).

Also avoid white sugar, white flour, processed foods. Try and ensure he gets plenty of greens, broccoli is specially good. Also plenty of liquids.

As you 'alkalize' his diet through various initiatives like this you should see a big improvement.
    A fellow parent.

    I too am eczematic.

I suffered a terrible eczema in 2005 but now I'm cured.

As my mission of thanks I made a website and maintain up to date cure protocols to cure eczema. My latest cure protocol is dated January 2008.

Everything you need to know and cure eczema is here in my website. Good skill to your child. I know I do with my eczematic children as well. Raw food is just the answer. So simple. So effective.

See my introduction to the new cure protocol:

January 2008 Eczema / Psoriasis Cure Protocol Highlights Raw Food Section

(01 January 2008) My new Eczema and Psoriasis cure protocol for January 2008 is out and this time I highlight the requirement for raw food as your staple diet. If you want to be cured forever, you have to go raw, only true human food will do.

I observe that a raw food, basically fruitarian diet is 80% of the cure. And I pound on it this time.

This new cure protocol is split in 2 parts.

Part One is the Simple Cure using raw foods diet alone. This is for the sick and feeble minded. Many afflicted people will only be able to read and understand this small section. I made it this way thinking that the sick are usually mentally challenged, I knew I was back then. But pushing raw fruitarian diet immediately, I hope to upgrade their intelligence immediately, within 1 month. Then they will be interested to read the full cure protocol and the books required for reading.

Part Two, the full eczema / psoriasis cure protocol improves immensely from its predecessors. I have changed the books required for reading. I included only 3 books required for reading and these books are ALL FREE to read right now, online, every time. You can download and view on your computer or print and bind into a book for those who may find it more convenient to read in book form.

This cure protocol is actually an all encompassing Cure for ALL Diseases approach. There are just a few minor adjustments I did to specifically address eczema and psoriasis. Namely the mentioning of avoiding nightshades and recommending the psoriasis cure books of Connolly and Pagano.

This time I am decorating this cure protocol with photos. This will make it more appealing. I hope you enjoy reading my newest cure protocol for January 2008. Write me about how to improve this cure protocol.

Good skill, be well, and may we all live long happy lives.

I was told that milk can make eczema worse. Try cutting down his milk intake for a while.
A popular treatment for eczema is bathing in dead sea salts. People who have tried it have seen positive results to their eczema after bathing in such salts. It may or may not work as well but it is certainly worth a try. Make sure first that he's not allergic to it by exposing a part of his body to it and see if any allergic reaction might occur.

Another popular natural treatment of eczema is through the use of aromatherapy. Lavender in particular, when combined with chamomile, can help cure eczema.

    The best thing to do is to ';avoid as many eczema triggers as possible. Keep your child鈥檚 skin moist. After bathing, apply moisturizer within three minutes to retain the moisture in the skin. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Keep your child鈥檚 bedroom and play areas free of dust mites (a common trigger). Use mild soaps 鈥?both on your child鈥檚 skin and on your child鈥檚 clothing. Dress your child in breathable, preferably cotton, clothing.';

How can i beat my facial eczema? do you know any kind of fast and reliable treatment? please?

I have eczema on my feet. I find products with oatmeal in them help tremendously. Aveeno makes a good line of products witho oatmeal in them. They have facial washes (make sure you use one that's very gentle), soaps, lotions, body washes and oils along with a bath powder. I've even used ground up oatmeal I had at home in a pinch to use when my eczema flares up. All I did was grind some up in a blender and put it in a clean nylon. I wet the ';puff'; with some warm water and dabbed it on my eczema then I rinsed with lukewarm water. Are you seeing a dermatologist for this? There is a prescription gel, Protopic, which is for eczema and is safe to use on any part of the body. It also works for psoriasis.

But, you have to keep using it.
    Goats-milk, drink it.
I suggest the all natural supplement Optiflora. Optiflora treats the cause and not just the sumptoms.

This two-product system uses new technology to protect beneficial microflora during the rigors of shipping, storage, and the acidic journey through your stomach. Other products claim live microflora at the time of manufacture. Optiflora guarantees the delivery of live microflora (500 million) to your intestines. This is a patented process.

This two-product system includes Probiotic (Bifidus %26amp; Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora).

Often times when something is going on inside our bodies it will manifest itself to the outside in some form such as eczema.

Do you know of any alternative treatments for eczema?

My sister(23) has had eczema all her life. It completely covers her legs. She used to get regular cortizone shots, but there not good for your body after years of treatments. Oatmeal doesn't work anymore. Most creams/lotions just help with the dryness but not the itching. Anyone know of natural treatments that might help?Do you know of any alternative treatments for eczema?
The following treatment should work fine:-

Ask her to wash her legs everyday morning and evening in luke warm water and apply olive oil. After one week or so when the skin has become soft, start applying Aloe Vera, a certain cactus plant which has a sticky fluid coming out of the leaves. If you practice this religiously, she should be free of eczema for the rest of her life and her legs will start glowing. Send me a photograph of her legs after curing.Do you know of any alternative treatments for eczema?
Has she tried tanning? Fake and bake or natural sun light should help.
believe it or not, there is a cream lotion you can buy at walmart. its their generic brand and its simply called ';eczema';. it WORKS LIKE A CHARM EVERYTIME for me! stops the itching right away, and i must say, i enjoy the scent too! another good way to stop the itching, is to take a hot bath with moisturizing body wash or bubble bath.
There is a company called DermaTechRx who has wonderful safe products for eczema. They even offer samples so you can try before you buy. I highly recommend this company and their products.

If you can reach a Korean traditional medical treatment clinic, I would recommend you take her it and check the type of her body. It is similar to Chinese traditional treatment. However the grouping people( through their know-hows) and thereby, giving them treatment is distinctive.

Depending on the body system of an individual, he/she is given a different regimen whereby they are forbidden to eat meat, egg, or bean ; reversely recommended to eat bug whit, rice, seafood, etc.

The treatment works like this. If you easily get hot and sweat despite short-time and mild exercise by nature. You should stop eating food which makes you hot and gives extra energy so that you can keep cool your body down.

I know this may sound unfamiliar to you and your sister. I am also with people who suffering eczema. It is not easy to follow the regimen but it will worth her awhile to try it.

I hope your sister will get better in no time.
i had a mild case of eczema, and my doctor prescribed a steroid creme. it helped instantly, but mine was really mild. also, lotions aren't good, because they don't actually really return moisture to the skin, they just temporarily adds moisture to the skin. for long-term moisture to relieve dryness and itchiness try an ointment designed for extremely dry skin. my doctor recommended aquaphor. it's helped a lot.
Oatmeal in a Muslim bag in the bath tub. It great for eczema. Oatmeal is full vitamin e. Make sure there nothing else in the bathtub. Another thing is 8 oz of apple juice quarter tea spoon of Epsom salt it clean the liver. If the liver is cleaned out it helps eczema.
try the water only with out using any kind of soap or body shampoo avoid totally any chemicals from any sort use wet towels and try towels every hour easy do not irritate and ask your doctor for tablets to reduce the irritation,do not fore get to replace clean towels at list after being used twice
Soothe your eczema irritation. This common skin condition is characterized by dry, itchy skin. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful:

    Avoid allergens and irritants

Work with a qualified professional to identify airborne allergens, chemicals, foods, and irritants that make your condition worse

    Take fatty acids

Supply anti-inflammatory fatty acids missing in many people with eczema by taking 500 to 1,000 mg a day of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) from evening primrose oil or borage oil, or 1,800 mg a day of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) from fish oils; children should take amounts proportionately less according to body weight

Help children avoid allergies with beneficial bacteria

Pregnant women and newborns should get probiotic supplements that contain 10 billion colony-forming units a day of lactobacillus-type bacteria to reduce risk of eczema in early life Dietary changes that may be helpful

Eczema can be triggered by allergies.1 2 Most children with eczema have food allergies, according to data from double-blind research.3 A doctor should be consulted to determine whether allergies are a factor. Once the trigger for the allergy has been identified, avoidance of the allergen can lead to significant improvement.4 However, “classical” food allergens (e.g., cows’ milk, egg, wheat, soy, and nuts) are often not the cause of eczema in adults. A variety of substances have been shown, in a controlled trial, to trigger eczema reactions in susceptible individuals; avoidance of these substances has similarly been shown to improve the eczema. Triggers included food additives, histamine, salicylates, benzoates, and other compounds (such as aromatic compounds) found in fruits, vegetables, and spices.5 These reactions do not represent true food allergies but are instead a type of food sensitivity reaction. The authors of this study did not identify which substances are the most common triggers.

It has been reported that when heavy coffee drinkers with eczema avoided coffee, eczema symptoms improved.6 In this study, the reaction was to coffee, not caffeine, indicating that some people with eczema may be allergic to coffee. People with eczema who are using a hypoallergenic diet to investigate food allergies should avoid coffee as part of this trial.

    Vitamins that may be helpful

Researchers have reported that people with eczema do not have the normal ability to process fatty acids, which can result in a deficiency of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).7 GLA is found in evening primrose oil (EPO), borage oil, and black currant seed oil. Some,8 9 10 but not all,11 12 13 14 double-blind trials have shown that EPO is useful in the treatment of eczema. An analysis of nine trials reported that the effects for reduced itching were most striking.15 Much of the research uses 12 pills per day; each pill contains 500 mg of EPO, of which 45 mg is GLA. Smaller amounts have been shown to lack efficacy.16

Supplementation with borage oil, another source of GLA, has led to reductions in skin inflammation, dryness, scaliness, and itch in eczema patients in some,17 but not all, preliminary18 or double-blind trials.19

Many years ago, use of large amounts of vegetable oil (containing precursors to GLA) was reported to help treat people with eczema,20 21 but these studies were not controlled and do not meet modern standards of research.

Ten grams of fish oil providing 1.8 grams of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) per day were given to a group of eczema sufferers in a double-blind trial. After 12 weeks, those using the fish oil experienced significant improvement.22 23 According to the researchers, fish oil may be effective because it reduces levels of leukotriene B4, a substance that has been linked to eczema.24 The eczema-relieving effects of fish oil may require taking ten pills per day for at least 12 weeks. Smaller amounts of fish oil have been shown to lack efficacy.25

One trial using vegetable oil as the placebo reported that fish oil was barely more effective than the placebo (30% vs. 24% improvement).26 As vegetable oil had previously been reported to have potential therapeutic activity, the apparent negative outcome of this trial should not dissuade people with eczema from considering fish oil.

Although supplementation with 400 IU of vitamin E per day has been reported in anecdotal accounts to alleviate eczema,27 research has not supported this effect.28 Moreover, rare cases of topical vitamin E potentially causing eczema have appeared.29 People with eczema should not expect vitamin E to be helpful with their condition.

A double-blind trial reported that use of a hypoallergenic infant formula plus probiotics (500 million organisms of Lactobacillus GG bacteria per gram of formula, taken for one month) initially led to improvement in eczema symptoms in infants with suspected allergy to cow's milk.30 However, by the end of two months, both the group receiving Lactobacillus GG and the placebo group had improved approximately the same amount. In the same report, a preliminary trial giving 20 billion lactobacilli twice per day to breast-feeding mothers led to significant improvement of their allergic infants’ eczema after one month. In another double-blind trial, a different probiotic preparation (1 billion organisms of Lactobacillus fermentum VRI-033 PCC taken twice a day) reduced the severity of eczema in a group of young children with moderate or severe eczema.31 Probiotics may reduce allergic reactions by improving digestion, by helping the intestinal tract control the absorption of food allergens, and/or by changing immune system responses.

In 1989, Medical World News reported that researchers from the University of Texas found that vitamin C, at 50–75 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight, reduced symptoms of eczema in a double-blind trial.32 In theory, vitamin C might be beneficial in treating eczema by affecting the immune system, but further research has yet to investigate any role for this vitamin in people with eczema.Herbs that may be helpful

The table below summarizes the three categories of herbs used for people with eczema: anti-inflammatories and herbs that affect the immune system (immunomodulators), astringents (herbs that bind fluids and exudates), and herbs that affect the liver (also called alteratives). Alterative herbs are poorly researched. Astringents are only helpful if applied topically when weeping eczema is present; they will not help people with dry eczema.

    Mechanism of Action Examples

Anti-inflammatory and/or immunomodulator Allium cepa, Calendula, chamomile, chickweed, licorice, onion, Zemaphyte® Chinese herbal formula

Astringent (helps dry up weeping lesions) Oak, witch hazel (also anti-inflammatory)

Alterative (liver-supportive) Burdock, red clover, sarsaparilla, wild oats

Zemaphyte®, a traditional Chinese herbal preparation that includes licorice as well as nine other herbs, has been successful in treating childhood and adult eczema in double-blind trials.33 34 35 One or two packets of the combination is mixed in hot water and taken once per day. Because one study included the same amount of licorice in both the placebo and the active medicine, it is unlikely that licorice is the main active component of Zemaphyte®.36

Several Chinese herbal creams for eczema have been found to be adulterated with steroids. The authors of one study found that 8 of 11 Chinese herbal creams purchased without prescription in England contained a powerful steroid drug used to treat inflammatory skin conditions.37

A cream prepared with witch hazel and phosphatidylcholine has been reported to be as effective as 1% hydrocortisone in the topical management of eczema, according to one double-blind trial.38

Topical applications of chamomile have been shown to be moderately effective in the treatment of eczema.39 40 One trial found it to be about 60% as effective as 0.25% hydrocortisone cream.41

In a double-blind trial, people with eczema applied a cream containing an extract of St. John’s wort to the affected areas on one side of the body, and a placebo (the same cream without the St. John’s wort) to the other side. The treatment was administered twice a day for four weeks. The severity of the eczema improved to a significantly greater extent on the side treated with St. John’s wort than on the side treated with placebo.42 Although the mechanism by which St. John’s wort relieves eczema is not known, it might be due to the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects of hyperforin, one of its constituents. The cream used in this study contained 5% of an extract of St. John’s wort (standardized to 1.5% hyperforin). As topical application of St. John’s wort can cause sensitivity to the sun, care should be taken to avoid excessive sun exposure when using this treatment.

Onion injections into the skin and topical onion applications have been shown to inhibit skin inflammation in people with eczema, according to one double-blind trial.43 The quantity or form of onion that might be most effective is unknown.

A Japanese topical ointment called Shiunko has been reported to help improve symptoms of eczema, according to preliminary research.44 The ointment contains sesame oil and four herbs (Lithospermum radix, Angelica radix, Cera alba and Adeps suillus) and was applied twice daily along with petrolatum and 3.5% salt water for three weeks. Clinical improvement was seen in four of the seven people using Shiunko.

Topical preparations containing calendula, chickweed, or oak bark45 have been used traditionally to treat people with eczema but none of these has been studied in scientific research focusing on people with eczema.

Radiation therapy for breast cancer frequently causes painful dermatitis at the radiation site. In a study of women undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer, those who topically applied Calendula officinalis had significantly fewer cases of severe dermatitis, compared with those who used a standard medication.46 Calendula treatment was begun after the first radiation session and was applied twice a day or more, depending on whether dermatitis or pain occurred.

Burdock, sarsaparilla, red clover, and wild oats have been used historically to treat people with eczema, but without scientific investigation.

Though it has not been studied, theoretically shelled hemp seed or its oil may be useful for people with eczema due to its content of essential fatty acids.47

Numerous trials have reported that hypnosis improves eczema in children and adults.48 A preliminary trial emphasizing relaxation, stress management, and direct suggestion in hypnosis showed reduced itching, scratching, and sleep disturbance, as well as reduced requirements for topical corticosteroids. All of the patients studied had been resistant to conventional treatment.49
Have you tried Melaleuca products? I know a couple of people with eczema and by using melaleuca's products they have actually gotton their eczema under control to the point that they have no outbreaks at all. The one main product that helps is Melaleuca's Renew Lotion. I have samples of it, I could send you one to try and see if it works for your sister. A woman I just sent it to called me a couple of days later and said she couldn't believe how much it calmed down the itching so quickly. It actually helps the skin to heal itself. Here is some information on a Study of Renew Lotion on eczema... http://melaleuca.com/ps/pdf_us/US_RenewP…

All I can say is give it a try and see for yourself. You are welcomed to email me and I can mail it out to you.
Please also consider treating the eczema from within. The typical American diet is deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids. The single best source is all natural flax seed. Take a tablespoon a day with cereal or milk.

I used to have eczema. It was partly stress related. I believe it is also food related. Mine got worse when I was a teenager from using hydrocortizone and betamethasone. But when I recently used some on my daughter, I realized that I probably had contaminated the jar back then. The most important thing to remember when your rash is open is: keep it clean, don't touch it. What worked for me then was topical erythromicin within an alcohol gel. What are some effective treatments for eczema?
Eczema is caused by the dryness of the skin. Try using a product called Cetraben (you can buy it as a cream or a bath additive).

Steriod creams aren't ideal because a lot of people are allergic to it.

As long as you keep your skin moisturized, the eczema shouldn't be as bad and don't ever scratch it - it will make it worse!!
Mary Kay night cream it looks like pink vasoline.
Try having a sauna to relieve and cleanse your inner being, be good to your body and provide it with positive thinking and relaxation...All in all, don't stress yourself out!!!
I read a website which said that eczema could be cured (or at least greatly helped) by doing the following:

    1. Taking 3-4 baths a week with 2 cups of ACV - soak for 30 minutes then shower for a minute in cold water

    2. 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals to take a tablespoon of ACV in a tepid glass of water. Add a little honey or blackstrap molasses for taste.

Many years ago I had a lot of eczema on my back which lasted a couple of years.

My cure? APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV)!!!

My eczema was cured in 2 weeks of this regimen! At that stage, I had no idea why ACV would cure my eczema, but now I know that ACV ALKALISES the body. Eczema is a condition of excess acids in the body.

To make the bath even more powerful, you can add a cup of Epsom Salts and a cup of bicarbonate soda. You can read all about the alkalising bath on the alkaline/acid balance forum on Curezone. Also, check out the different ways to alkalise yourself yourself there.

If you suffer from eczema you have probably been given just about every type of topical cream known. Few realise that the gastro-intestinal tract is the main source of skin conditions.

The inner lining of the gastro-intestinal tract is the largest immune reactive surface in the body, amounting to the size of a small tennis court.

Within the GI tract this surface is repeatedly exposed to food particles, bacteria, yeasts, and other toxins that cause inflammatory reactions such as eczema. Reasearchers have found that patients with eczema have a much higher rate of gastro-intestinal disorders.

i have atopic ( i think that means i've had it as a child) it flares up when in summer it's really hot and the sweat is there and I scratch- i find not scratching impossible so in summer I have to wash frequently thru the day. I use only Cetaphil (commercial brand) 'soap' and their intensive moisturiser(with shea butter) - I also have dry skin. When it's humid it's better for my skin than dryness though because, unless I use my intensive moisturiser twice a day dryness makes it flake badly. when I was 5 or 6 years old I used to use aveeno bath powder I don't think it really worked well, but that could be my eczema reducing with age. Never used fragranced products near your eczema unless the labelling says it's hypoallergenic. ciao

Eczema is an itchy, noncontagious inflammation of the skin. In most cases, eczema begins as intense itching, followed by a patchy rash that is red, inflamed, dry and scaly. The rash most often affects the face, arms and legs as well as the creases of the hands and feet.

Often used interchangeably with the term “dermatitis,” eczema appears in many different varieties, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, latex dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, stasis dermatitis and dyshidrotic dermatitis

    8/24/2007: J-M from San Jose, California, USA writes: ';I've been using white distilled vinegar for my folliculitis to see if it might work. For about two weeks I've been immersing my legs in it for an hour each day. It appears to be helping, but until about 4 days ago, I've ran out of white distilled vinegar and so started to add apple cider vinegar. to get the vinegar all over my legs, I've been using my hands to splash it over the back of my legs and other areas where the vinegar does not go up to. (I've used a small bucket and just put my leg in it) I've noticed that my eczema on my hands are closing up. For a couple of years now, I've had eczema that would always be cracking and bleeding. At night when asleep I would scratch at my fingers and back of my hand. And even when I didn't scratch, the cracks wouldn't heal and thus I had hands that looked dry, cracked, and sorta bleeding. However the ACV has closed all the eczema spots and it looks to be healing nicely. It's only been 5 days, but I'm patient and I noticed that I don't scratch at night anymore. If you have ACV available, I suggest people with eczema try it for a week and see if their eczema closes up and is less itchy.';

I have also noticed that water and soap worsen eczema, so when he has it, I avoid them on the patches and use the oil instead.';

Any over the counter treatments for eczema that works well?

I have an annual deductible that I never meet. My doctor charges $80 for a basic visit, even just to have a medication renewed. I don't feel that a 1 inch eczema spot is worth this expense to me.Any over the counter treatments for eczema that works well?
Ideally you should apply a topical steroid (to control a flare) from your doctor for the prescribed time, and then switch to an EMOLLIENT (to prevent flares and heal skin) for as long as your skin desires.

However, DRINKING MORE WATER and Original Eucerin will stop your Eczema if you apply it 2-3 times daily, allowing it to soak in. If you find yourself rubbing the spot during sleep, etc, try putting a soft cotton bandage over a fresh application of Eucerin before you sleep, by morning you'll see a noticable difference, guarenteed! Take short showers and avoid abrasive material, soap, i.e. things that dry the skin!Any over the counter treatments for eczema that works well?
Combining organic eczema treatments with herbal treatments is a win-win situation. For example, the use of pasteurized cream is very soothing to the skin. In the chemical world, it is what is known as a base and bases are excellent for neutralizing the effects of diseased skin. If you suffer from eczema, you already know that soothing relief is the one thing you want the most.
Try using a natural soap for washing. Something with olive oil in it for instance. You can moisturise your skin with natural almond oil bought from the pharmacy. Almond is nearest in it's constitution to the natural oils in the human skin. My sister used it for her little boy when he had patches of eczema and found it to be very good. Keep away from anything with perfumes or colourings. Natural products are less irritant.

What is the best treatment for Eczema.?

    Emollients (moisturisers)

Emollients reduce water loss from the outer layer of your skin by covering it with a protective film. This keeps the water in the skin where it is needed and also helps to keep infections and other harsh substances out. Emollient creams and ointments are essential in the prevention and treatment of eczema. Emollients are very safe and you cannot overuse them. They are not active drugs and do not get absorbed through the skin into the body. What is the best treatment for Eczema.?
Talk to your doctor. My sister has it and benifits from a topical cream. Also, try not to scratch... that only causes it to spread. What is the best treatment for Eczema.?
menthol cuts the itch. try adding vicks vapor rub to your lotion of choice. i add johnsons and johnsons vapor bath to my 2yr olds bath, if we don't use it we have a very bad next day. also, if it is severe (like us) we use wet dressings...i put my baby in wet pj's, i know this sounds insane, but it really works. most important thing is getting the ointment/lotion/prescription steroids on your skin within 3 mins of getting out of tub to seal the moisture in your skin. good luck
Good hygiene! And try not to scratch them... They will irritate...

dry skin can lead to development of eczema in severe cases. that is why you need to keep the skin moist. to do this, you must first use an all natural skin care moisturizer that can be effective in locking in moisture to the skin. since it is all natural, it will not have negative side effects on the skin. you are maybe using product that is not effective on your skin type. all natural skin care works well for all skin types.

    Definition

Eczema is an inflammatory skin disease--sometimes a rash with watery discharge or development of scales and crusts.

    Symptoms

The skin breaks out and itches with burning and stinging. Sometimes little pimples form which turn into water blisters. Usually the skin dries up into little scales and itches.

    Cause

1.Cleansing the Skin: The skin is a very important part of the body; it is an ';extra kidney,'; an extra set of lungs for breathing, and has many other functions. We should keep it in a good condition, important as it is, but we usually treat it shamefully. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, and the skin should be bathed daily. This does not mean to use soap with each bathing, unless it is a natural type biodegradable liquid soap. Nearly all bar soaps do more damage to the skin than they aid it, by leaving residue of the soap to clog the pores. The pores are the doors and windows of the temple and must be kept open to let in oxygen (the breath of life) and to excrete toxins and waste.

2.Diet and Use of Natural Fibers: A person who uses lots of mucus foods has a gluey, sticky type perspiration. When this individual sweats and the body is not cleaned regularly, the dried sweat clogs the pores. This is a beginning cause of dermatitis, or skin malfunction. In addition, as a nation we have fallen in love with easy to wash and iron synthetic clothes. These rob the body of the breath of life because manmade synthetic fibers do not ';breathe.'; Only natural fibers such as cotton, wool, linen, silk, etc., can allow the skin to breathe properly.

3.Diet: These are two of our big problems; the third one is a diet devoid of wholesome foods. We use man's prepared materials, called food, that have been contaminated and processed, and in so many cases, should be classified as ';junk food.'; All aids to fighting dermatitis work better and faster if we consider the first three things mentioned--bathe regularly, return to natural fibers to wear, and eat wholesome foods

    Herbal Aids

1.Poke Root: Use the liniment or the infusion as a wash, and drink internally. Formula for liniment and infusion.

2.See formula for skin afflictions using burdock root, yellow dock, yarrow and marshmallow.

3.See formula for skin afflictions for a decoction using burdock root, centaury, fumitory, yellow dock and cayenne.

4.See formula using garlic, glycerine and burdock seeds.

5.Sun: Helios-therapy on the skin is very important, as the sun is the Great Doctor of all times. But this therapy must always be done with caution because the sun (though being a healer) is like fire, which can either provide gentle warmth or it can burn a city down. The sun will heal where medicinal aids, herbs and other procedures are slower. In many instances, it will bring skin cancer to the surface; and various other skin problems (such as acne, eczema, etc.) are beneficially aided by bathing in the sun. The internal use of tea of other herbal aids are often an herbal wash before the sunbathing are congenial and excellent.

6.Chickweed or Plantain: For eczema and other skin problems, use a fomentation over the irritated area made with chickweed tea and/or plantain, burdock root, Oregon grape root, and echinacea--covered with plastic. Or bathe the area with the tea a number of times during the day. Chickweed or plantain ointment is an aid for small outbreaks. Drink a cup of the tea two or three times or more a day. To each cup of the tea you drink add three to six drops of tincture of lobelia.

7.Walnut: A wonderful aid to relieve cases of dermatitis is found in the walnut family, using black walnut hulls or leaves or bark (Juglans nigra), English walnut (Juglans regia), or butternut (Juglans cinerea). Treat the skin malfunctions the same as with number six.

8.Golden Seal: Take one ounce of powdered golden seal root and mix thoroughly with nine ounces of linseed oil. Use the medicinal linseed oil from the health food store or drug store; do not use linseed oil from the paint store or hardware store--apply freely, externally. Use as an oral aid white poplar bark (Populus tremutoides--also known as quaking aspen), one cup three times in a day.

9.Dr. Christopher's Bone, Flesh and Cartilage: (BF%26amp;C) For the most severe cases of skin diseases in the advanced stage, use a combination we have called Bone, Flesh and Cartilage combination, internally and externally. Repeat procedure. Make the tea, soak flannel, cotton, or any white material other than synthetic--never use synthetic--wrap fomentation (soaked cloth) around the malfunctioning area and cover with plastic or wax paper, leave on all night six days a week and for as many weeks as needed until relief appears. Then continue a week or two for severe cases. Drink one fourth cup of finished concentrated tea with three fourths cup of distilled water three times or more each day.

10.Dr. Christopher's Chickweed Ointment: This is made of chickweed herb and bees wax and oils. Excellent for eczema and/or other skin infections, sores, burning, itchy skin or genitals, swollen testes, acne, hives, also for ulceration of mouth and throat. This is a wonderful healing ointment.

11.See formula to make a liniment using peppermint, olive oil, menthol and camphor.

12.Plantain: For skin diseases that result in scrofula or eczema, use the tea internally as a blood cleanser and use the strong tea externally as a wash. If the skin is not oily, you can use the ointment topically to affected areas.

13.Juices for Eczema: Carrot %26amp; cucumber.

14.Cabbage Leaves: Cabbage leaves applied to an infected wound, ulcer, or oozing eczema should be layered like roof shingles, allowing secretions to drain between the layers.

15.Tarragon: Soothing for eczema and scurvy.

16.Dr. Christopher's Healing Ointment: (CMM) Made of comfrey, marshmallow, marigold, bee's wax, and oils, this is an antiseptic to be used on lesions, eczema (dry), poison ivy, soothes inflamed surfaces, abrasions, burns, hemorrhoids, for bruises and swellings. Good to have on hand at all times.

    Testimonials

1.BF%26amp;C cures skin problem worse than eczema: One day a lady came into my office in a frantic state of near hysteria. She told me that her fourteen-year-old daughter was at home and some neighbor ladies were with her, to keep her from doing harm to herself. That morning the mother had stopped her daughter from committing suicide. The girl, for several years, had a severe dermatitis that had baffled the family physician, dermatologists and allergy specialists. The skin problem was from the knees down to her feet, the arms from elbows down over the hands, and her neck and face were also covered with this dermatitis condition. The dermatologists said it was different from pityriasis, psoriasis, eczema, etc., and had no name for this thick, heavy scaling from which the girl was suffering. This young girl had become a recluse, refusing to go to school, church, parties, etc., and because of this terrible condition which was called ';incurable'; she was eating herself into an extremely oversized individual. The despair she was suffering was pushing her into a suicidal frame of mind.

I had never had such a case presented to me before and my ';back was up against the wall.'; This was an emergency and I did not have the time to sit in a laboratory and figure out a combination to try on her. I offered a quick silent prayer for help and a formula came immediately to my mind. As it came I had the lady and her companion write it down. I told them to go to an herb shop or health food store and get the various herbs, mix them, and make a fomentation. She was to foment the legs, arms, neck and face areas, and also to have the daughter drink some of the tea. I felt confident enough to promise good results!

It was on a Tuesday morning that the mother had come to see me. On Friday the report came back that the scabs and scales had left the afflicted areas and the girl's skin had a good ';healing glow'; to it. The next message I received was six months later. The girl was now a choir leader at the school she had returned to, and she was again busy in church and social activities.

This particular group of herbs is one we called ';bone, flesh and cartilage'; formula. We found it would do many things besides skin problems.

2.Cabbage Leaves: A watchmaker suffered for a year with a painful eczema of both hands, preventing him from working. The lesions were acutely inflamed, and the fingernails were separating, about to fall off. Applications of cabbage leaves twice daily for a few days brought relief from pain, as clear fluid drained onto the dressing. With continued treatment healing took place within two months.

3.Newborn Cured of Eczema: At one of Dr. Christopher's lectures, a woman brought a bundle to the front, a little baby all wrapped up. She unwrapped the bundle, and as she did, eczema scalings flew up all around dusted Dr. Christopher's dark suit. The baby was simply covered with eczema; he described it as horrible to see. The family had adopted the baby six months previous, and it was entirely covered with the scaling, evidently from birth. The family had employed their usual doctor, a pediatrician, and a skin specialist, but no one could do a thing for the little sufferer.

Dr. Christopher told the mother to fill a bassinet with warm Chickweed tea and to bathe the baby, pouring the tea over the head that could not be submerged. The mother was also to give Chickweed tea internally, in small amounts.

Within just a matter of days, the baby began to improve, and after a week or two, the eczema disappeared completely, though the child had suffered with it so many months.
Emu Oil. It's an ancient aboriginal cure, and it really works. Apply the oil 2-3x daily to the affected skin. The itch will subside within a couple of hours, and the skin will heal within 2-4 weeks.

Be careful if you are using a steroid cream at the same time, as emu oil can increase the uptake into the rest of your body, so just use the emu oil, or reduce the amount of steroid cream you use.
    zinc or sudo cream.
Allopathy suppress these eruptions and later on they come out as more dangerous diseases like heart/ kidney troubles or asthma etc.

Depends on what is causing it. Poor nutrition is a major cause; Take a good multiple vitamin-mineral pill, and a good essential fatty acid supplement daily for starters. Keep a food diary and see what foods help or aggravate your problem. See the references below for info and discussion and advice.

eczema dries out the skin, the most direct way to treat eczema is to help the skin regain its moisture retention capacity. Just moisturizing your skin isn't enough. When a moisturizer is applied, it hydrates the cells, but the cells quickly lose the moisture. If substances that work synergistically together to restore the skin cells' elasticity are applied to the skin, then as the healing progresses, the cells continue to admit moisture as before, but after the healing are better able to keep it from escaping.

Shea butter is a wonderful agent for revitalizing our skin cells so that they regain their moisture retention capacity. Unrefined shea butter not only contains a high moisturizing fraction, but also contains an extraordinarily high healing fraction. To enhance the shea butter's ability to reverse the effects of eczema, we have infused it with 2essential oils: bergamot and patchouli.

    Ingredients

    This product contains:

    Shea Butter

Shea Butter has been used for centuries in Africa to keep skin healthy and beautiful. Shea Butter's almost magical effects are due to the fact that it has both a high moisturizing fraction and an extraordinarily high healing fraction.

    Bergamot

Bergamot oil's antiseptic action makes it useful for the treatment of acne and skin infections.

    Patchouli

Patchouli oil regenerates skin cells and thus is used for a wide variety of skin problems

    Virgin Olive Oil

Pure virgin olive oil is used to give our shea butter a softer consistency. But it has beneficial effects for your skin as well; its unique constituents nourish parched, sensitive skin, and restore it to a more youthful and supple appearance.

There's a lotion by C.O.Bigelow that is sold at Bath and Body Works. It's called Lotio Mentholus. I've known people who had eczema and used it and loved it! It's fragrance free and feels so good! You can feel the soothing as soon as you put in on. you can use it all over your body so it's great for everyday. Check it out. You can go to Bath and Body Works (usually in the mall) and just try it before you buy it. See if it works! (and get a free hand massage too!)

Also, if you haven't tried it already my friend had eczema and went to a dermatologist and got cortisone creme and it worked. So if cortisone will work try to that too. Good luck! Let me know if you try the lotion and like it! :)
I think ';triderm'; is quite good too. I used it and recovered quickly. Dunno if that helps...

Do you know what type of Eczema you have? Eczema treatment will differ based on the type that has been diagnosed.

Calamine lotion is effective at soothing the affected area, helping to keep it dry and protected. Another treatment aimed to soothe is application of wet bandages. Dermatologists often suggest use of cotton clothing and bedding as this natural fiber cools skin and allows it to breathe.

Shampoos and ointments that contain coal tar additives can help patches of red, itchy skin decrease in size. Finally, eczema that is considered severe is sometimes treated with UV lights.

Here's a resource that can offer you some relief from your eczema.

Dermatitis, also called eczema, is an inflammation of the skin. There are different types of dermatitis, and the disorder can have many causes and occur in many forms. Generally, dermatitis describes swollen, reddened and itchy skin.

These steps can help you manage dermatitis:

Avoid scratching whenever possible. Cover the itchy area with a dressing, if you can't keep from scratching it. Trim nails and wear gloves at night.

Dress appropriately. Doing so may help you avoid excessive sweating.

Wear smooth-textured cotton clothing. This will help you avoid irritation.

Avoid other irritants. These include wool carpeting, bedding and

clothes, and harsh soaps and detergents.Eczema treatment?
Eczema is a form of dermatitis, or inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent or recurring skin rashes characterized by redness, skin edema, itching and dryness, with possible crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing or bleeding. Areas of temporary skin discoloration sometimes characterize healed lesions, though scarring is rare

    Moisturizing

Dermatitis severely dries out the skin, and keeping the affected area moistened can promote healing and retain natural moisture. This is the most important self-care treatment that one can use in atopic eczema.

The use of anything that may dry out the skin should be discontinued and this includes both normal soaps and bubble baths that remove the natural oils from the skin.

The moistening agents are called 'emollients'. The rule to use is: match the thicker ointments to the driest, flakiest skin. Light emollients like Aqueous cream may dry the skin if it is very flaky.

Emollient bath oils should be added to bath water and then suitable agents applied after patting the skin dry. Generally twice daily applications of emollients work best and while creams are easy to apply, they are quickly absorbed into the skin, therefore needing frequent re-application. Ointments, with less water content, stay on the skin for longer and need fewer applications.

Typical emollients are: Oilatum or Balneum bath oils, Medi Oil, Aqueous cream for washing with, Diprobase or Doublebase pump-action creams also used for washing and may be later applied directly to the skin.Sebexol, Epaderm ointment and Eucerin lotion or cream may be helpful with itching. Moisturizing gloves can be worn while sleeping.

As an alternative to wet-wrap therapy for rehydrating unbroken skin direct application of water-proof tape for an extended period, with or without other medicinal balms, can stop dryness and prevent mechanical abrasions of the itch-cycle and reduce lichenification.

One alternative treatment, fashionable in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, was Sulphur. Recently Sulphur has re-gained some credibilty as a safe alternative to steroids and coal tar.

    Eczema treatment?

I have heard of a remedy for eczema, it is that if you mix together ground nutmeg with water to make a paste and put it on your eczema it will ';cure'; it or make it feel and look better. Is this true?Eczema treatment?
I have found one thing that works really well: Neem. It is an oil made from tree leaves, and in India, they make soap and lotions with it. Hydrocortisone cream thins the skin, and isn't really good to use for a long time. Neem can be used safely for as long as you need it. Used it on my son with great results! I bought my neem soap and lotion at Bindi.com, but other places are cheaper.Eczema treatment?

AND I KNOW THIS SOUNDS CRAZY but I lather natural green tea ( one with no sugar) over my eczema places before I shower, it has anti-oxidants in it that helps clear up my eczema/rashes/flare-ups :)Whats the best treatment for eczema?
The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and sea food which trigger my flare-ups.

After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments.

Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free.

After about 3 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.

It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.
