Does any one know any alternative/holistic treatments that may help a baby that has eczema?

I have studied holistic health in school and know how to help an adult with dietary changes, supplements and stress reduction. I'm not sure how to look for info on holistic health for infants. Is is safe to give a baby probiotics?Does any one know any alternative/holistic treatments that may help a baby that has eczema?
here is an excerpt taken from master herbalist, Dr John Christopher who worked several decades with real people in his clinic

His site says

';3. Newborn Cured of Eczema: At one of Dr. Christopher's lectures, a woman brought a bundle to the front, a little baby all wrapped up. She unwrapped the bundle, and as she did, eczema scalings flew up all around dusted Dr. Christopher's dark suit. The baby was simply covered with eczema; he described it as horrible to see. The family had adopted the baby six months previous, and it was entirely covered with the scaling, evidently from birth. The family had employed their usual doctor, a pediatrician, and a skin specialist, but no one could do a thing for the little sufferer.

Dr. Christopher told the mother to fill a bassinet with warm Chickweed tea and to bathe the baby, pouring the tea over the head that could not be submerged. The mother was also to give Chickweed tea internally, in small amounts.

Within just a matter of days, the baby began to improve, and after a week or two, the eczema disappeared completely, though the child had suffered with it so many months. [NL 6-5]';

for best results use organic or wildcrafted chickweed..get it in bulk herbs..use distilled water for the tea as it is empty and absorbs more of the helpful phytochemicals that cure and prevent disease.

he has an herbal that includes info on children

How old is the baby? What does the 'eczema' look like - hives, rash, pimples? And where is it - diaper area, trunk, extremities?

Some of the remedies mentioned may get rid of the rash, but that's only a symptomatic cure. What is the cause?

How long has the baby had it and were there any changes around the onset? New or different food or formula? Different laundry detergent? Baby medication? Contact with pet - flea powder or possible pet allergy.

Is your baby in daycare where you don't have control over the environment?

Does your baby have regular bowel movements - not constipated and reabsorbing toxins?

Are you microwaving any of the baby's food or formula? Don't!!

Are you mixing food or drinks with tap water? You should be using purified water. A good reverse-osmosis water purifier would be an excellent investment for your family.

Are you breast feeding? Any changes in YOUR dietary habits?

Is the infant drinking formula - cows milk, goats milk, soy - organic or not? Could be an allergy here.

Yes, it's very beneficial to give an infant probiotics. Some types are processed in such a way that they don't need refrigeration.

Is your baby stressed? Loud noise or fighting in the household? You can do some infant massage in addition to moderating the environment.

Do you bathe the baby in chlorinated tap water? Get a bath water filter to remove chlorine.

Evaluate all the above possibilities first. If you need to take your infant for consultation, look for a licensed Naturopathic Doctor or holistic Nurse Practitioner or maybe there's even a holistic pediatric MD? Some holistic Chiropractors specialize in child care. Bottom line - consult with someone who will take time to evaluate and trouble-shoot the cause, not just prescribe medication for a symptom.

Hope this helps...
It depends upon the age of the infant. I have bought a brand of probiotics for my toddler but it was actually a brand designed for children. I'm afraid that I don't have it any more so I can't remember the brand name. It would suggest, though, that probiotics are safe to use but dosage needs to be altered and maybe not all probiotics.

I have fed my children probiotic yogurts without any problems from the age of 12 months.

Omega oils are also good for eczema so, if the infant is old enough then include fish, seeds (or their oils) etc. in their diet.

I was told that dabbing a wet nappy on their eczema works because the urine sorts it out. However, I didn't like my baby smelling like a Hobo so I gave up on that one.

It is great to use alternative/holistic treatments rather than drugs but also be vigilant. You need to make sure that the eczema doesn't progress to the point where it becomes infected and you have to use antibiotics.

NB - in some babies, eczema is caused by an allergic reaction to cows milk

Take Care and God Bless.
My granddaughter was born with eczema, and a very serious one at that. Usually that's a sign of allergies, and I've seen her react to regular yogurt(but amazingly, not to organic yogurt). What we do is this: the baby gets a bath every second day, and we put a table spoon of apple cider vinegar into the bath water to offset the alkoloids that dry out the skin. We also add a bath oil that is helping very dry skin. When the bath is finished, her mother lotions her off with a very good moisturizing lotion called Renew(same brand bath oil). The pediatrician had told my daughter to use Crisco(yes, the Crisco in cans)to help control flare ups. The baby's hair is taken care of with a shampoo for irritated scalps made by the same company that makes the Renew Lotion. So far has this Lotion worked wonders. I have heard that an ointment called Aquaphor is also very good. We do not use it because the lotion we use is pretty much taking care of the problem.

I've had an eczema on my back and I know what kind of misery it is. I go to integrative medicine and was put on Vitamin B-100, Fish oil, and Biotin by my physician. When I asked her about the possibility of vitamin deficiencies during pregnancy, she said that it is possible but it is not possible to treat a baby for that yet. In Europe they are using mare's milk to treat eczema and psiorasis, with a 35% success rate. However, it is said that the babies have to be at least 1 year to be put on mare's milk(Equilac). My daughter's pediatrician had, by the way, said the same thing: there is a possibility that my daughter had gotten a deficiency of vitamin B. They pretty much know very little about why so many babies are born with eczema lately. So I would say the best bet is a very good lotion, a little apple cider vinegar in the bath water and bathing only every other day to prevent that the skin dries out more.

If I can be of further help, feel free to e-mail me:

PLEASE try coconut oil (the organic kind, of course!). It did wonders for my mother's eczema, when the doctors could do NOTHING. It's wonderful for burns, too. Just put it on as a lotion. I would feed it to the baby, as well.

Most health food stores carry it. We get it online at www.tropicaltraditions.com They have a lot of good info about it, so it's worth a visit even if you buy at your local store.

As for probiotics, yes, but there are special infant formulas. Any decent health food store should have them. The best are refrigerated.
i take vemma as do all 3 of my kids. Below is link for testimonies from people who use it for childrens eczema and the 2nd link is about vemma itself and the multitude of other things it can do for you.
just use lotion it will go away.

and are you sure it is eczema if you aren't a dermatologist and don't like medicine doctors?

castor oil mixed with calendula extract seems like a good alternative, but I still trust doctors.
